Digital Identity Hackathon sponsored by Onyx by J.P. Morgan — Prizewinners and Summary
The Digital Identity Hackathon, organized by Encode and sponsored by Onyx by JP Morgan, has come to a triumphant conclusion, having commenced its journey on 12th September with a Launch Event. This month-long event captivated a diverse community of digital identity enthusiasts and devs, who came together to brainstorm, develop and push the boundaries of digital identity solutions.
With the steadfast backing from key industry players such as Biconomy, Visa, Lens, zkSync and Magic, alongside the mentorship and resources from Onyx, the hackathon was interspersed with enriching technical workshops and competitive bounties that enhanced the overall participant experience.
The grand Finale was an enthralling spectacle, with participants taking the stage to present their cutting-edge projects live, vying for the top prizes. Having the honour of hosting this convergence of talent and innovation has been an enriching experience, and the groundbreaking projects birthed from it speak volumes of the limitless potential of our digital identity community.
How it Worked
Our hackathon participants had four weeks to build their projects and submit them for judging. During this time, they also had the opportunity to participate in several events related to the hackathon:

Leveraging the power of Web3 technologies, this project paves the way for enhanced healthcare interoperability and privacy. It integrates DIDs and VCs with advanced zero-knowledge proofs to streamline the exchange of electronic health records across systems while adhering to healthcare standards like FHIR. By employing zk-STARKs and smart account platforms, it offers a secure and user-friendly solution for data sharing, contributing to the progress of precision medicine.
3rd place: Product Passport — $2,000
This innovative project develops a secure location tracking system for wallet addresses, representing carriers and their signed decentralized IDs (DIDs), using private broadcasts for security. Utilizing Onyx’s SDK, it creates verifiable credentials and leverages zkSync Era’s blockchain for immutable supply chain verification. A smart contract emulates the functions of a bill of lading, streamlining cross-border payments, reducing fraud, and enhancing transparency by conditioning the release of payments or cargo upon fulfilment of set criteria.
SDK Specific Challenges
1st place: Onyx SDK Enhancements: DID methods and SD-JWT support — $2,500
The project has successfully integrated did:web and did:pkh, along with SD-JWT, into the existing Onyx SDK framework. Modifications to the SDK include the incorporation of these DID methods and the implementation of SD-JWT support, enhancing its capabilities for secure and verifiable digital identity management.
2nd place: Support for did:web — $1,500
The SDK update introduces “did:web,” a feature that allows secure management of decentralized identities through web domains, providing a standardized way to verify identities on the internet. This method is compatible with the ES256K algorithm, linking to Ethereum addresses, thus enhancing user control over online identity while ensuring privacy and security. The SDK supports CRUD operations via an API, with separate classes for each method, and includes comprehensive testing — from unit tests confirming specification adherence to integration and end-to-end tests for robust, real-world application.
3rd place: Chalcedony — $500
Chalcedony is a set of zkSync contracts and a Web App that allows users to transfer crypto assets via sending links (vouchers), without knowing the recipient’s address beforehand and without the recipient having any native currency.

Additionally, they have developed a wallet that allows users to efficiently manage their credentials and a Trust Registry that enables financial bodies to cooperate within a decentralized governance framework, enhancing the overall trust model. Contributing to the Onyx SDK, the team has introduced new functionalities, such as selective disclosure and credential revocation, to advance the digital identity ecosystem.

It offers secure, decentralized contact pages for businesses, ensuring credible B2B interactions through smart contract-enabled communications. With Blockreach, businesses are equipped with additional security layers, assigning DIDs and VCs to each verified partner. This web3 Yellowpages variant targets the Finance & Identity Intersection category, focusing on secure, authenticated business connections.
3rd place: Discord_web3 — $250
The team has ingeniously integrated a full web3 experience into Discord, negating the need for additional app downloads. By crafting a Discord bot, they’ve facilitated the creation of Ethereum and Ripple accounts, as well as the ability to conduct transactions and engage in trading activities directly within the platform. Leveraging the Lens protocol, users can communicate across platforms and manage their session activity seamlessly. This innovation is rooted in the understanding that app fatigue is a barrier to technology adoption, and by enhancing a widely-used platform like Discord with sophisticated web3 identity verification and fintech functionalities, they bridge the gap for users to effortlessly enter the web3 space.

DeFund introduces a novel investment model where participants securely pledge funds via smart contracts, preserving asset control and aligning with DeFund’s investment guidance. It operates on a commitment basis, eschewing traditional money pooling for a system where investors sign agreements to buy assets as directed. The platform optimizes portfolio strategies for ideal asset distribution and profit reallocation and is built with future quantum computing advancements in mind. DeFund prioritizes safety, with investors retaining their funds and purchased securities, mitigating the risk of loss. It promotes equitable profit sharing among participants. The system’s core functionalities include refined portfolio optimization to balance risk and returns, efficient asset and profit allocation to reduce transfer costs, and sophisticated techniques like integer optimization and network flow algorithms.

Integrating with J.P.
